Historically used as mourning vessels, tear bottles have been found in ancient Roman and Egyptian tombs.Women cried into vials or cups and buried them with loved ones as symbols of honor and affection.
Tear Bottles reappeared during the 19th century Victorian era when those in mourning filled small, ornately decorated bottles with tears of sorrow and remembrance. The mourning period ended when the tears had evaporated from the bottle.
Today, interest in the tear bottle has grown. Gift givers recognize and appreciate its history and symbolism, and are giving them for all kinds of special occasions.
Tear bottles may have originally taken inspiration from the Old Testament. In Psalm 56:8, David prays to God: "Thou tellest my wanderings; put thou my tears in Thy bottle; are they not in Thy book?" David's words remind us that God keeps a record of human suffering and always remembers our sorrows and tears.
Tear bottles today are given to symbolize joy and love for others important rites of passage. Birth, adoption, graduation, and wedding are occasions where a lasting gift like a beautiful tear bottle will surprise and delight loved ones. During times of sadness, such as illness or death, a tear bottle is especially meaningful and can express deep sympathy to loved ones.
